My Take
Sweeney earns my respect less for her Saturday Night Live fame or her film roles than for her nerve. Turning your own life, including illness and a hard reckoning with faith, into solo theatrical comedy takes real courage and real craft. The Richard Dawkins Award signals that she is a comedian who thinks as much as she jokes, and her work as a writer and blogger confirms a restless, articulate mind. I am drawn to performers who use their own voice to wrestle honestly with the world, and she does exactly that, with humor intact.
