My Take

I came to Jussi Adler-Olsen through the Department Q series almost by accident — grabbed The Keeper of Lost Causes on a whim — and ended up absolutely hooked on his deeply flawed, deeply human detective Carl Mørck. What I love most is that Adler-Olsen doesn't write standard Scandinavian noir gloom-porn; there's genuine dark wit running through every book, and the Department Q basement setting — this literal dumping ground for inconvenient cold cases — is such a perfect metaphor. Winning the Glass Key award and the Barry Award for Best Novel tells you the wider crime fiction world took notice, and rightly so. The fact that he didn't even pivot to fiction until 1997, well into his forties, makes the scale of what he built even more impressive.
