Kaishu Hirano

Kaishu Hirano carries one of the heaviest surnames in snowboarding. Born in Murakami, Niigata, in October 2002, he competed at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics — an achievement most riders would build an entire career around, and yet the first thing anyone says about him tends to involve his older brother. I find that genuinely unfair, and also unavoidable. Halfpipe is a discipline where the family name gets shouted before the run even starts, and the only way out of a shadow that size is to keep dropping in anyway. He stands 165 cm, rides for TOKIO inkarami, studies at Nihon University, and took halfpipe bronze at the 2018 FIS Junior World Championships. What I can say is that qualifying for an Olympic Games is not something a relative can hand you. He got there on his own board, in his own run, under a name that magnifies every mistake. I hope the next time I write about him, the comparison feels beside the point.
