Katherine Harris

Few names are as bound to a single dramatic moment as Katherine Harris, forever tied to Florida's 2000 recount. I don't sit in judgment of how that chapter played out, but I'm struck by the sheer steel it takes to stand at history's flashpoint and keep going. A Key West native who moved from real estate into the state senate, the secretary's office, and then Congress was never going to be a forgettable figure. To me she embodies a hard truth about public life: some roles guarantee you'll be loved or loathed, never ignored. That refusal to fade is, in its own way, remarkable.
