Ken'ichi Hagiwara

Kenichi Hagiwara went by Shoken, and in Japan that single nickname does most of the work an entire biography would do elsewhere. He arrived out of Kitaadachi in Saitama Prefecture as a singer, fronting the Tempters during the Group Sounds era - Japan's own beat-band boom, screaming teenagers included - and then walked directly into acting without the apprenticeship that usually costs a pop star a decade of credibility. What he did there changed the temperature of Japanese television. His detective in Taiyo ni Hoero! was scruffy, insolent, and visibly unsuited to the job, which was not how police were played at the time. Then came Kizudarake no Tenshi, a series about two disreputable men doing disreputable work, in which he is slovenly and half-feral and lit from behind the eyes. It still plays as genuinely dangerous rather than as period kitsch, and very little television from 1974 survives that test. He took the Elan d'or Newcomer Award that year and a Golden Arrow Award as well, and he kept working in film, including Love Letter in 1985. His private life was a wreck, publicly and repeatedly. He disappeared from the industry more than once and came back each time, and my honest impression is that the performances got rawer with every return - less technique, more exposed nerve. Whether that trade was worth what it cost him is not mine to settle. He died in 2019 at sixty-eight. Japanese screen acting has become far better behaved since then: cleaner, more professional, considerably safer. Watching Shoken now, I am struck by how thoroughly that particular kind of volatility has been bred out of the business, and by how much duller things are without him.
