My Take
Kenya Barris is exactly my kind of storyteller. The Inglewood native brought the texture of Black family life into America's living rooms with Black-ish, carrying both the laughter and the bruises intact. He handles heavy social material without ever turning preachy, making you laugh first and then landing the point right under your ribs. Girls Trip showed the same instinct on the big screen. Writing, directing, producing, he wears every hat. I rate people who can move the culture through narrative, and he plainly can.
