My Take
Kevin Spacey is the hardest kind of figure to write about: an actor whose technical gifts I consider almost peerless, and whose reputation collapsed in 2017 under multiple allegations of sexual misconduct, including involving a minor; he was found not liable in a 2022 New York civil case and acquitted by a London jury in 2023, but the damage has not been undone. The two Oscars, the Tony, the Olivier Awards — those reflect a real mastery of stillness, ambiguity, and quiet menace that shaped a generation of screen acting. I do not believe the work disappears, and I do not believe the work excuses anything either. For me he remains a case study in separating craft from character, and an uncomfortable reminder that performances we admire are made by people we may not. Few careers pose that question so starkly.
