Klaus Mäkelä

Klaus Makela's rise honestly leaves me a little awestruck. Still only thirty, he is chief conductor of the Oslo Philharmonic, music director of the Orchestre de Paris, and already designated to lead both the Royal Concertgebouw and the Chicago Symphony. The world's most storied orchestras rarely bet their futures on one young artist all at once. As a trained cellist, he understands phrasing from the inside, and that physical, singing sense of line shows on the podium. Some worry about prodigies burning out, but I suspect we are only watching the prologue of a very long story.
