My Take

Akiyama is the player I would use to explain what Japanese baseball looked like in its loudest era. A 185 cm outfielder who could run, field and hit, he sometimes finished a home run with a backflip onto the plate, which sounds like something a fan invented. He anchored the great Seibu Lions teams of the late 1980s, then was traded to the Daiei Hawks and became the backbone of a club still building itself. Years later he managed that same franchise, by then the SoftBank Hawks, to a Japan Series title. That arc is what earns the Hall of Fame plaque for me. Not the numbers alone, but the fact that two different organizations were better for having had him. Showmanship and substance rarely travel together. He carried both.
