My Take

Writing about Kyle Rittenhouse is genuinely difficult for me, because he is less a celebrity than a fault line. The Kenosha shootings in 2020, in which he killed two men and wounded a third at age 17, and his subsequent acquittal turned him into a symbol claimed by both sides of America's divide. I have no interest in adding to either chorus. What stays with me is how quickly a teenager's actions became national political currency, and how little room that left for sober reflection. My honest take is that his story says more about the United States in this era than about any single person, which is exactly why it deserves careful, unsentimental attention.
