Kyosen Ōhashi

Most people remember Kyosen Ohashi as a television face, but he started as a jazz critic, and that shows. A man who learned to explain music in words could sit down as a quiz show host and settle a whole studio with one line; the lightness only works because there is an argument underneath it. Born in Sumida, Tokyo in 1934, raised in Chiba, a Waseda dropout, he spread himself across broadcasting, horse racing and advertising copy, then left for a semi-retired life abroad long before anyone called that a lifestyle. He won a seat in the upper house and quit it almost immediately, which sounds exactly like him. He died in 2016, aged 82.
