My Take
Lea Michele is the rare performer whose ambition is the whole point. A Bronx kid who hit Broadway as a child in Les Misérables, broke through in Spring Awakening, then made Rachel Berry on Glee a global symbol of the relentless overachiever, she essentially played a heightened version of her own drive. That voice and that fierce, occasionally too-much intensity are exactly what I find thrilling about her. Awards piled up, and her later return to Broadway in Funny Girl proved her resilience. I am drawn to artists who refuse to be small, and Michele has never once chosen small.
