Lewis Wilson

What thrills me about Lewis Wilson is that he was the very first actor to play Batman on screen, in the 1943 serial. Every beloved version of the Dark Knight since traces back to his cowl. His turn may look modest next to the glossy blockbusters that followed, but there is a special daring in originating a character no one had embodied before. That is a different order of nerve from anyone who inherits an established role. He passed in 2000, yet his pioneering credit is permanent. I am a sucker for trailblazers, and Wilson quietly laid the foundation for an entire mythology.
