Li Yueru

What strikes me about Li Yueru is the sheer nerve it takes to leave a thriving career in China and test yourself in the WNBA, where every possession is contested by the best in the world. Being drafted and then actually carving out minutes overseas, while still anchoring the Chinese national team, is no small feat for a player operating across languages and basketball cultures. I have a soft spot for athletes who bet on themselves abroad rather than staying comfortable at home, and Li belongs squarely in that camp. She is the kind of competitor I find easy to root for.
