My Take

Montez is one of the most audacious self-inventions I've encountered. Born Eliza Gilbert in County Sligo, Ireland, she reinvented herself as a Spanish dancer and rode sheer nerve into the bedchamber of King Ludwig I of Bavaria, who made her a countess, before the 1848 revolution drove her into exile. I'm less interested in whether she was a great dancer than in her refusal to accept the life she was handed. There's something genuinely thrilling about a woman who lived several lifetimes in just 39 years, scandal and all, entirely on her own terms.
