My Take
Louis Jordan, the King of the Jukebox, is one of those figures I think history undersold for decades. Born in Arkansas in 1908, he turned the alto sax and a sly sense of humor into jump blues, planting seeds that rock and roll would later harvest. I love that he peaked right as the swing era faded, dancing in the gap between two musical worlds. The 2018 Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and his 1987 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction feel like overdue justice. To me, Jordan proves that joyful, danceable music can be just as influential as anything more solemn.
