Maria Ewing

Ewing fascinates me as an artist who seemed to burn herself into every role. A Detroit-born mezzo who expanded into full soprano parts, she made Carmen and Salome unmistakably her own. What draws me to her is the description of a 'singing actress' who fused vocal beauty with riveting stagecraft, the rarest combination in opera. I love performers who fully inhabit a character rather than simply present it, and by all accounts she did exactly that. Her death in 2022 closed a singular career, but her fearless, boundary-pushing interpretations left a vivid mark on the operatic stage.
