My Take
What stays with me about Marian McKnight is the arc, not the crown. A girl from Manning, South Carolina, born in 1936, taking the Miss America title in 1957 and then refusing to let that be the whole story, going on to UCLA and an acting career. I have my reservations about pageant culture, but I respect anyone who treats a tiara as a doorway rather than a destination. She belongs to that golden-era Hollywood generation, and there is a quiet grit in her trajectory that I find genuinely admirable, even decades on.
