My Take

Mary Steenburgen is my favorite kind of actor: the one who makes everyone around her better. She won an Oscar early, and instead of chasing leading-lady status she built a career out of ensemble work — the string of cast awards on her shelf tells you exactly how her peers value her. I love that she came from a small Arkansas town, studied her craft properly in New York, and later revealed herself as a singer and songwriter too. There is a warmth and unforced intelligence in her screen presence that only deepens with age. Quiet excellence like hers deserves louder applause.
