Masaru Hamaguchi

Masaru Hamaguchi, born in 1972, is the tsukkomi of the comedy duo Yoiko, alongside Shinya Arino. In Japan, though, he is best known for something a comedian is not supposed to be good at: he genuinely learned to free-dive and spearfish, on camera, over years of location shoots. That is the part I find interesting. Variety television runs on people pretending to be competent for laughs. Hamaguchi went the other way and became actually competent, which is a strange thing to do to your own act — once the audience trusts your skill, they stop laughing at the attempt and start watching the result. He seems untroubled by that. He can hold a segment on pure ability and then step back into the studio as the straight man of a manzai pair without visible seams.
