Masato Kai

Masato Kai was born in 2003 in Miyazaki Prefecture, went through Nichinan Shintoku High School and Senshu University, and now plays outside hitter for Osaka Bluteon and the Japan men's national team, with an Olympic appearance already on his record. What strikes me is the timeline. Reaching an Olympic roster before your mid-twenties, in a sport where Japan spent decades being told it was too short to compete at the net, says something about how quickly the ceiling has moved. Outside hitter is also the least forgiving job on the court: you attack, you pass, you dig, and there is nowhere to hide when the serve comes straight at you. Handing that role to someone barely out of university is a statement of trust, not a courtesy. He is one of the players I will be watching, because his story is still almost entirely ahead of him.
