Mickey Raphael

Mickey Raphael moves me as the ultimate loyal sideman. Standing beside Willie Nelson in The Family since 1973 is a half-century of devotion that I find genuinely beautiful in an industry built on chasing the spotlight. With nothing but a harmonica, he conjures the aching, dusty soul of country music, content to make the boss sound his best rather than step forward himself. I have always loved the masters who work behind the scenes, and his range as producer and actor only deepens my respect. This Dallas-born craftsman has also played with Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, U2 and Neil Young, and that range is irresistible.
