My Take
Micky Ward is my favorite kind of fighter: not the flashy phenom, but the blue-collar grinder who simply refuses to break. Coming out of Lowell, Massachusetts, he fought like the town raised him, all heart and forward pressure. His trilogy with Arturo Gatti is some of the most brutal, beautiful boxing I've ever watched, and the Ali-Frazier Award honoring those wars feels perfectly fitting. At 173 cm he was never the bigger man, yet he kept walking into the storm. Hollywood made a film about him, but honestly the real grit needed no embellishment whatsoever.
