Mike Krzyzewski

Mike Krzyzewski, Coach K, pulled off the hardest thing in sports: sustained excellence across generations. The Chicago native's military background clearly shaped his discipline and command of people, and over four decades at Duke from 1980 to 2022 he stacked five national titles and thirteen Final Fours. Add the Olympic gold he delivered with USA Basketball and you have a coaching record that may never be matched. I find the longevity more impressive than the trophies; staying relevant to teenagers for forty years takes a patience most leaders never approach. The fact that an unpronounceable name became simply Coach K says everything about the affection he earned.
