Naya Konosuke

Ōhō carries one of the heaviest names in sumo. Born in Kōtō, Tokyo, in 2000, he entered the professional ranks in January 2018 with Ōtake stable, and the second character of his ring name points straight back to his grandfather Taihō, one of the greatest yokozuna of the Showa era. That inheritance is less a gift than a permanent verdict: win and it is the bloodline talking, lose and it is a famous name wasted. As a starting condition for a teenager, I find it genuinely unfair. What he has built with it is steady rather than explosive: jūryō in January 2021, the top makuuchi division a year later, and a career-best rank of sekiwake. With wrestlers born into sumo families, my first thought is never talent but endurance, and he has cleared that bar. He is still in his mid-twenties, so there is time to be discussed as himself.
