Nehemiah Persoff

Nehemiah Persoff lived to 102 and packed that life with more than 200 screen and stage credits across 55 years, which alone commands respect. Born in Jerusalem and a fixture of mid-century American film and television, he was a quintessential character actor, the sort whose presence makes a scene feel real. What moves me most, though, is his second act: after retiring from acting he flourished as a painter. That refusal to let the creative impulse run dry is rare and beautiful. To me he embodies a whole life given to expression, and I admire that completeness without reservation.
