Nellie Spicer

What draws me to Nellie Spicer is the position she plays. A setter is rarely the name on the highlight reel, yet she is the brain that decides where every attack goes. To rise from Barrington, Illinois through UCLA volleyball and onto the United States national team as a 1.75 m setter takes a quiet, relentless intelligence rather than raw spectacle. I have a soft spot for players whose value shows up in their teammates' numbers instead of their own. Spicer strikes me as exactly that kind of selfless engine, the sort of athlete whose contribution you only fully appreciate once you understand the game.
