I think the smartest way to understand Nicki Minaj is as an actress who happens to rap. Her LaGuardia drama training shows in everything: the alter egos, the sudden accent switches, the way a single verse can contain three different characters. What I respect most is her timing, because she forced the industry to make room for female rap when the mainstream had almost none, and the current wave of women MCs walks through a door she kicked open.
