My Take
Nicole Malliotakis strikes me as a thoroughly local politician in the best sense. Born in Manhattan, schooled on Staten Island and at Seton Hall, she broke through in the New York State Assembly in 2010 and now represents Staten Island and southern Brooklyn in Congress. As a Republican voice she invites strong reactions, and I don't expect everyone to agree with her. But a woman of Greek immigrant roots building a base and climbing to the national stage is no small feat. What I respect, beyond ideology, is the persistence required to carry hyperlocal concerns all the way to Washington.
