Nobuhiro Ishida

Nobuhiro Ishida is one of those fighters who quietly earns your respect before you even realize it. Born in Kumamoto in 1975 — a place more associated with volcanic landscapes and horse sashimi than boxing gyms — he made the jump to Kinki University out in the Kansai region, which already tells you something about his drive. Japanese professional boxing tends to fly under the radar internationally, but the domestic scene is fiercely competitive, and carving out a career there through the 2000s and into later years takes real grit. His signature night came in 2011, when he stopped the unbeaten James Kirkland in Las Vegas as a 17-to-1 underdog, and he now passes it on at his own gym in Osaka. That's enough.
