My Take

Respighi is, to me, one of the great painters who happened to work in sound. His Roman trilogy still floods my imagination with light, water and crowds the moment it begins, and I think that vividness comes from the rare double life he led: a serious musicologist digging through old modes and chant, married to an almost cinematic flair for orchestral color. That tension between the scholar and the colorist is what keeps him fresh. Losing him at fifty-six feels like a real loss, yet the music never fades. The blazing finale of the festivals remains my personal favorite.
