My Take
What I love about P. J. Soles is how she made bubbly cheerfulness genuinely unsettling. As Norma in Carrie and Lynda in Halloween, her airy charm became part of the horror's texture, and as Riff Randell in Rock 'n' Roll High School she was pure anarchic joy. A German-born actress who studied at Briarcliff College and Georgetown who became a beloved fixture of late-70s genre cinema is a wonderfully unlikely story. She never chased A-list stardom, yet her presence is instantly recognizable to anyone who grew up on those films. I find that kind of durable cult devotion more telling than any box-office number, and she clearly earned it.
