My Take
Patrick Harlan is, to me, one of the more quietly impressive careers in Japanese entertainment. Raised in Colorado Springs, born in 1970 and educated at Harvard, he had every conventional door open to him. Instead he went to Japan and became a comedian — in Japanese — as half of the duo Pack'n Mack'n, known to most of the country simply as Pakkun. People underestimate what that requires. Speaking a second language fluently is one thing; landing a punchline in it, in front of a live audience, on someone else's comedic rhythm, is a completely different discipline. Timing doesn't translate. You have to rebuild it from scratch. What I find most telling is where he ended up: television presenter, actor, voice actor, and a commentator whose opinion is actually solicited rather than treated as novelty. The foreign-talent slot in Japanese media can trap people in permanent outsider status. At 185 cm with an easy, unhurried delivery, Harlan simply walked out of that box and kept working.
