My Take

Paul Mauriat occupies a warm corner of my listening life. His 1968 remake of "Love is Blue" topped the U.S. charts for five weeks, but his real gift was making ease sound effortless. To me, crafting music that simply dissolves tension is far harder than it appears, and this Marseille-born maestro made a career of it, beloved especially in Japan. The 1996 Commandeur des Arts et des Lettres feels fitting. Though he passed in 2006, those shimmering strings haven't aged a day. I find genuine artistry in his refusal to be complicated, and I return to his records gladly.
