Paul Schrader is, to me, American cinema's great theologian of guilt. Long after Taxi Driver made his name, he kept circling the same wound, the lonely, self-flagellating man searching for grace, in Raging Bull, The Last Temptation of Christ, and beyond. Raised in a strict Calvinist Michigan home that forbade movies, he seems to have spent a whole career turning that repression into prayer on screen.
