My Take

Paul Schrader is, to me, American cinema's great theologian of guilt. Long after Taxi Driver made his name, he kept circling the same wound, the lonely, self-flagellating man searching for grace, in Raging Bull, The Last Temptation of Christ, and beyond. Raised in a strict Calvinist Michigan home that forbade movies, he seems to have spent a whole career turning that repression into prayer on screen. What impresses me most is the persistence: while flashier peers faded, Schrader keeps making lean, morally serious films into his late seventies. He is a craftsman of the soul, and I admire him deeply.
