My Take
Paweł Pawlikowski is one of the few contemporary directors whose name alone makes me pay attention. From Warsaw to Oxford to a decade of documentaries, his path built a patient, observant eye that now defines his fiction. Sweeping the 2014 European Film Awards and taking Best Director at Cannes in 2018 and again in 2026 confirms what his images already prove. I am drawn to his austere, prayer-like compositions and his courage to let silence and empty space carry the story. He trusts the audience to lean in, and that restraint moves me more than any spectacle could.
