My Take
Percival Everett is, for my money, one of the most quietly fearless writers working today. Self-described as pathologically ironic, he refuses to be pinned to a single genre, sliding from westerns to satire to philosophical fiction with unnerving ease. What I admire most is the timing of his ascent: he won the National Book Award for James in 2024, a daring retelling of Huckleberry Finn from the enslaved Jim's view, after decades of underappreciation. A novelist getting sharper and more celebrated in his late sixties is rare. I find his whole trajectory deeply inspiring.
