My Take

Prakash Mehra deserves more reverence outside India than he gets. Born in Bijnor, he was one of the architects of the masala film, that exuberant blend of song, dance, melodrama and action that defines popular Hindi cinema. His real legacy, for me, lies in his partnership with a young Amitabh Bachchan, where he built the vehicles that turned a star into a phenomenon. Directors like him are craftsmen who make others shine. He passed in 2009, but trace the energy of today's Bollywood back far enough and you arrive at him. I always want to honor the architects behind the icons.
