My Take

Prince is, for my money, one of the most complete musicians who ever lived. He pioneered the Minneapolis sound and absorbed funk, rock, and pop into something entirely his own, often writing, playing, and producing everything himself. That density of talent is almost unfair. I even love that he collected Razzies for his film work, because it shows an artist willing to risk and fail rather than play it safe. His death in 2016 left a silence the music world still feels. What stays with me is his fearless independence, the sense that creative freedom mattered more to him than any rulebook.

Overview

Prince Rogers Nelson (June 7, 1958 – April 21, 2016), known mononymously as Prince, was an American singer, songwriter, musician, dancer, actor, and filmmaker. Often being credited as one of the greatest musicians of his generation, he pioneered the Minneapolis sound and was influential in the evolution of various other genres. Prince was raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He signed a record deal with Warner Bros.
