My Take
Raheem DeVaughn strikes me as a craftsman more than a chart-chaser. From Newark and educated at Coppin State, he built his reputation the slow way, breaking into the Billboard 200 with his debut and climbing to number five with Love Behind the Melody, earning real critical respect along the way. His neo-soul carries a warmth and intimacy that rewards close listening rather than casual radio play. I tend to root for artists who let the songwriting do the heavy lifting, and DeVaughn fits that mold. He is a singer, actor, and writer at once, and that range deepens my regard for his steady, unflashy work.
