Rairu Sugita

Rairu Sugita was born in December 2002 in Tochigi Prefecture, north of Tokyo, debuted in a commercial in 2017, won newcomer awards at the Yokohama and Takasaki film festivals for the 2019 film Hansekai, and led the film Sanka in 2022. What stays with me is the name itself, written with the characters for thunder and for the qilin, the mythical beast of Chinese legend, and it is not a stage name but what appears on his documents. Japanese naming has loosened considerably over the past few decades, and a name like that says something about the household he came from, or at least about its ambitions for him. Careers in Japanese film and television tend to build quietly, in supporting parts, and his is building on schedule. File this one under check back later.
