Ray Gordy

Ray Gordy interests me as a study in the journeyman wrestler's particular dignity. Cycling through ring names like Jesse and Slam Master J on WWE's SmackDown, he never quite landed a fixed identity, yet he kept showing up and taking bumps. I have a soft spot for the mid-card grinders who hold the whole enterprise together while the marquee names soak up the lights. Carrying a Chattanooga toughness into the ring, he reminds me that wrestling depends on its workhorses. Retired now, he earned a quieter applause I am happy to give.
