My Take
Born in Koriyama, Fukushima, he studied at Nagoya City University, not film school, and he writes as well as directs. His reputation rests on romance told through conversation: pauses, things left unsaid, small talk holding a whole scene. The awards followed rather than led: best director at the Yokohama Film Festival for Just Only Love, and the audience award at the 2022 Tokyo International Film Festival.
