Rocco Mediate

Rocco Mediate is, to me, proof that you can lose and still win the room. His 2008 U.S. Open battle with Tiger Woods — an 18-hole playoff dragged into sudden death — should have been a heartbreak, yet he grinned through it and made everyone love golf a little more. Six PGA Tour wins and a 2016 Senior PGA Championship confirm the talent, but it is the warmth and obvious joy he brings to competition that stays with me. I value athletes who treat the game as a privilege rather than a war, and Rocco embodies that better than almost anyone.
