My Take

Sabine Baeß represents, for me, a brilliance that outlasts its era. Dresden-born, she and partner Tassilo Thierbach became 1982 World pair champions and two-time European champions, an extraordinary feat achieved within the demanding machinery of East German sport. I am always moved by pair skating because it cannot exist without absolute trust between two people, two bodies breathing as one across the ice. Reaching the very top under that pressure speaks to discipline I can only imagine. Whatever quiet life she leads now, the fact remains carved in history: for one shining season, she was the best in the world.
