My Take

I came to Satyajit Ray late, but the moment I sat through Pather Panchali I understood why film people talk about him with that particular kind of reverence — the kind reserved for directors who don't just tell stories but seem to breathe life straight onto the screen. He did everything himself: directed, wrote the scripts, composed the scores, even designed the titles and illustrated his own magazine. The Apu Trilogy alone would have secured his legacy, but he kept going for four more decades, racking up a Golden Lion at Venice, the Ramon Magsaysay Award, a French Legion of Honour, and finally an Honorary Oscar in 1992, accepted from his hospital bed just days before he died. What gets me is the tenderness — nobody filmed poverty, childhood, or quiet dignity with as much love as he did. A genuinely irreplaceable filmmaker.
