Saya Takagi

Saya Takagi — born Ikue Masudo in Hamamatsu, Shizuoka, in 1963 — made a turn that almost no one in Japanese entertainment makes. She built a career as an actress and worked as a lyricist, then became publicly known as an activist campaigning for the legalization of cannabis in Japan, a position that sits far outside the mainstream there and carries real professional cost. I want to be careful here, because the policy question is genuinely contested and this is not the place to argue it. What interests me is the structure of the decision rather than its content. Entertainment careers run on being broadly likeable; the entire economic logic pushes performers toward saying nothing that half the audience would reject. Takagi knew exactly what the trade was and took the unpopular side anyway; in 2016 she was arrested for possessing cannabis, spent six months in custody, and in 2017 received a suspended one-year prison sentence. You can disagree with her completely and still notice that she was not optimizing for approval. Most public figures never test that about themselves. She did, in the open, and accepted the bill.
