My Take
Honestly, the first thing that got me was where this guy is from — Ishigaki Island, Okinawa. That's not just "Okinawa," that's the far edge of the Ryukyus, turquoise water and coral reefs and all. Growing up out there and making it to professional baseball in Japan takes a kind of quiet determination that I find genuinely impressive. Shin'ya Kayama is a relief pitcher, not a household name, not a guy who lands cereal-box deals — he's the type who shows up, does his job in high-leverage innings, and lets the work speak for itself. At 173 cm he's not the imposing presence you might picture on the mound, but that almost makes me root for him harder. The distance from a tiny island at the edge of Japan to a pro roster is real, and he covered it. I'd cheer for him every time.
