Shogo Sakakura

Shogo Sakakura, born in May 1998 in Shisui, Chiba, went from Nihon University Daisan High School to the Hiroshima Toyo Carp in the fourth round of the 2016 draft and has caught for them since. Let me talk about what the position itself means. Catcher is the least forgiving job in baseball. You absorb every pitch, you carry the game plan for the entire staff, you manage the pitcher's confidence inning by inning, and then you are expected to hit as well. A team does not hand that role to a young player casually. That Hiroshima entrusted it to someone in his twenties says something about the trust he earned inside the clubhouse, which is the kind of credit that rarely shows up in a database field. Catchers tend to be remembered less for statistics than for the eras they anchored, and he is anchoring one now.
