My Take

What fascinates me about Stellan Skarsgård is his complete lack of vanity as a performer. Here is a man who moves between Lars von Trier's most punishing art films and the biggest productions on earth, treating both with the same craftsman's seriousness. At 191 centimeters he could coast on sheer presence, yet his best work is almost whisper-quiet; he acts with stillness, letting the camera come to him. The Silver Bear in 1982 and the Golden Globe in 2020 bookend four decades of relevance, which almost no actor manages. For me he is the gold standard of the character actor: indispensable, unshowy, and quietly fearless.
